My Gastein experience
Four ski areas await snow lovers of all ages with the perfect mix of action and family-friendly relaxation. Lovingly designed practice areas, child-friendly ski courses, thrilling toboggan runs and inviting thermal spas: Around Dorfgastein, Bad Hofgastein and Bad Gastein, families will find everything they need for an exciting winter holiday.
The Bad Hofgastein-Bad Gastein ski area (Schlossalm-Angertal-Stubnerkogel) is ideal for families looking for plenty of space on wide, gentle blue slopes and an especially large, varied range of activities and experiences.
The Dorfgastein-Großarl ski area is a great choice for families who are looking for a particularly relaxed start to skiing – with gentle slopes, lovingly designed practice areas and lots of extra experiences.
Learning your first turns stress-free? In Gastein, this is child's play in the truest sense of the word. Because the creatively designed practice areas in the ski region make learning lots of fun. Whether it's the GASTI Park in Dorfgastein, the huge XXL GASTI Park in Angertal or the GASTI Park on the Stubnerkogel - a lovingly designed environment awaits everywhere, where little beginners will quickly become proud piste racers.
Right next to the valley station of Gipfelbahn Fulseck cable car in Dorfgastein, you’ll find GASTI’s sunniest snow park – a spacious practice area offering ideal conditions for first turns in the snow. Across 17,400 m², beginners learn how to ski in a fun and safe way with four magic carpets and the particularly beginner-friendly Rauchleiten platter lift. The two local ski schools teach according to the Best2Learn Ski amadé standards, using modern, child-friendly teaching methods. From the snow park, the Gipfelbahn Fulseck cable car takes you straight on to GASTI’s Family Line, a safe, kilometre-long blue slope leading from the mountain station down to the middle station. This is where newly learned turns can be practised and refined at a relaxed pace, accompanied by mascot GASTI, who guides guests of all ages safely down the mountain. All of this makes Dorfgastein one of the most family-friendly ski resorts in the region.
In the idyllic Angertal valley near Bad Hofgastein, families can look forward to one of the largest children’s and beginner areas in the Alps. Across 35,000 m², families enjoy stress-free skiing – from mastering their first turns all the way to creating their own Skimovie video. Modern lift facilities, gentle conveyor belts and playful learning elements provide ideal conditions for a relaxed start to skiing. Indoor and outdoor play areas, a winter sports zone and the GASTI children's hut add extra variety away from the slopes. Ski schools and rental equipment are available right on site and can be conveniently booked online. More advanced family members benefit too: the Stubnerkogel-Schlossalm ski area opens up many additional kilometres of slopes as well as excellent rental, service and dining options. Free parking, the ski bus and winter walking trails in the natural paradise of Angertal round off the winter experience. A special mark of quality: the award for best children’s ski area from the independent Skiresort test.
Right next to the valley station of Stubnerkogelbahn cable car, you can find an ideal practice area for anyone stepping onto skis for the very first time. Two modern magic carpets and a professionally designed slalom pole course help beginners prepare for their first lift rides in a fun and playful way. After those first turns, the double chairlift takes young piste racers up to a gentle practice slope – perfect for safe, confidence-building descents. Thanks to its immediate access to the full cable car infrastructure, families can easily enjoy different levels of difficulty all in one place. With ski schools and childcare available right on site, plus the spectacular mountain scenery of Bad Gastein, getting started with skiing feels especially relaxed and motivating.
What's the easiest way to learn to ski? Together with new friends, of course! Numerous ski schools in Gastein offer courses for beginners. Top-trained ski instructors are committed to accompanying children's first steps or turns in the snow. And the parents? They can now relax and explore the varied pleasure slopes of the four ski areas.
Have your kids outgrown their ski gear again? Or don’t have their own equipment yet? In Gastein, it’s easy to hire skis, poles and more. Many rental shops in the region offer state-of-the-art equipment and expert advice. This ensures that young skiers always have the perfect gear on the slopes, making skiing carefree and enjoyable right from the start.
On your sledges, get set, go! Perfectly groomed toboggan runs in the Gastein valley promise fast-paced descents for the whole family.
Whether you prefer spinning pirouettes or carefree gliding, the spacious ice rinks in the Gastein valley offer families joyful winter moments full of fun.
While adults enjoy the fine cuisine of Gastein's ski huts, children can recharge their batteries after skiing with hot chocolate or yeast dumplings at one of the many ski huts in the Gastein Valley.
Hop on a mountain cart and race down Fulseck adventure mountain on three wheels – an action-packed addition to classic skiing fun!
Whether it’s for warming up after skiing or as a fun activity on a rainy day, Gastein’s thermal spas are a popular destination for families in winter. While the children race down the water slides, mum and dad can make the most of the wide range of wellness and sauna options at Alpentherme or Felsentherme spa. Ski day or spa day? In wintry Gastein, it’s easy to have both.
