My Gastein experience
The first step is to see a specialist, in most cases a rheumatologist or orthopaedist. They should issue the application for a cure, as an application from a specialist increases the chance of approval. So go to the specialist!
An outpatient spa stay is approved every three years or an inpatient spa stay every four years . In the case of medical exceptions , a cure can also be approved more frequently. The application should be medically substantiated .
Scientific information and studies on the effectiveness of the Gastein cure can be sent on request to kur@gastein.com.
In Germany, depending on the medical indication, an open spa treatment can be applied for as an outpatient preventive treatment or an inpatient preventive treatment or rehabilitation . The application is submitted together with the attending physician; a medical specialist's justification can be particularly helpful.
Billing agreements exist with AOK, BARMER, KKH, DAK-Gesundheit, Techniker Krankenkasse, HEK - Hanseatische Krankenkasse, BIG direkt gesund, various company and guild health insurance funds, KNAPPSCHAFT and SVLFG, among others.

With private health insurance in Germany, the assumption of costs for a cure or rehabilitation generally depends on the individual tariff. A general entitlement to reimbursement does not exist automatically. It is therefore essential to clarify with your private health insurance provider whether and to what extent services in Gastein will be covered before starting your cure. In many cases, private patients first receive an invoice and then submit it to their insurance company themselves; whether full or only partial reimbursement is provided depends on the agreed tariff.
All medically prescribed treatments and co-payments can be deducted as "extraordinary expenses" in your income tax return or employee tax assessment. Accommodation can also be deducted if the accommodation is declared as a spa stay on the invoice. However, the medical necessity of the treatments must have been certified by a medical officer in advance.
If the spa application is rejected, this does not necessarily mean the end of the application. The application often lacks sufficiently clear medical justification.
In this case, it can help to revise the application together with the doctor, submit additional findings or enclose a more detailed specialist opinion . In some cases, queries can also be clarified directly between the treating doctor and the insurance company.
