In Dorfgastein, winter sports fun doesn’t stop at skiing and snowboarding. The region also invites you to explore the snowy landscape at a more relaxed pace. From ski touring and winter hiking to snowshoeing and cross-country skiing: There’s an activity for every taste.
Tip for thrill-seekers: Paragliding in the skies above Dorfgastein gives you a bird’s-eye view of the region that’s simply marvellous!
In Dorfgastein, hiking enthusiasts don’t stop for winter. They lace up their boots and head out on the winter hiking trails for amazing views of the picturesque snow-covered landscape.
From the Gipfelbahn Fulseck mountain station, a well-groomed winter hiking trail takes you along the mountain ridge to the Kieserlbahn cable car station. After walking 1.2 kilometres, you can treat yourself to a break at Restaurant Wolke 7. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy a stunning 360-degree view of the surroundings.
The tour to Fulseck starts at the middle station, where you strap on snowshoes and head up towards the summit via Heumoosalm and Arltörl. This route spans 4.8 kilometres and climbs nearly 600 metres in elevation. Once you reach the peak, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking scenic views and a break at the cosy Gipflstadl restaurant.
Tip: Those who prefer a more relaxed winter hiking experience can take the cable car to the Fulseck mountain station. From there, it’s a gentle walk back down to the valley.
If you would like to climb the summit on skis – either part of or all the way – Dorfgastein offers two ski touring routes.
The ST8 ski touring route starts in Dorfgastein and takes you to the middle station via the Fulseck summit lift. After a short descent via the D1c and the Gruberwaldweg D8, the ascent begins via the Heumoosalmweg to the Heumoosalm and on to the Arltörl, the pass between the Großarl and Gastein valleys. The route runs along the ridge past the Kieserl with its 360° panorama to the Fulseck summit lift mountain station. The tour covers a total of around 5.6 kilometres and 687 metres of altitude difference. Please always check the latest avalanche report.
The ski tour evenings take place every Thursday as soon as the valley run is open. The pistes between the valley and the Wengeralm are open until 9 pm on these days.
This makes it possible to climb up to the Wengeralm! Either the Reiterhütte or the Wengeralm or both are open for ski tourers on these evenings.
If you love cross-country skiing, you’re in luck! Down in the valley, two cross-country ski trails are waiting for you – perfect for both classic cross-country skiing and skating.
The Mühlbachloipe trail starting at Stoani (restaurant) is ideal for beginners. Good to know: Additional access points are located at Stoffbauer and in Maierhofen.
In winter, the sports field in Unterberg turns into a popular meeting place for cross-country skiers. The floodlights come on at 17:00, allowing sports enthusiasts to enjoy the trail until 20:00. Plus, guided cross-country skiing courses are held on Thursday evenings – the perfect opportunity if you’re curious about giving the sport a try.
For a thrilling descent from the mountain to the valley, you can swap your skis for a paraglider. With Lois Grugger’s Parataxi, you can take a tandem flight that allows you to gently glide down into the valley while enjoying spectacular views of Dorfgastein.
