How to reach Gastein

Important! A vignette is compulsory on Austrian highways! You can obtain the vignette at almost all petrol stations and highway service stations near the border (10-day, 2-month and annual vignette).

Travel by car from the north (DE, NL, BE, DK, PL etc.)

  • Freeway A8 Munich - Salzburg
  • A10 Tauernautobahn highway Salzburg - Villach

Current information on the A10: Due to extensive renovation work between Golling and Werfen, there will be obstructions on the A10 Tauernautobahn until June 2025. The construction site is 14 kilometers long and delays and traffic jams are to be expected due to the fact that only one lane can be used in some places.

  • Exit junction Pongau/ Bischofshofen
  • 311 direction Innsbruck (Gasteinertal)
  • At Lend - junction Gasteinertal B167

Travel by car from the west, southwest (IT, CH, FR etc.)

  • Highway A12 Inntalautobahn Innsbruck - Munich
  • Exit Wörgl-Ost, then federal highway

Travel by car from the east (AT, CZ, SK, HU etc.)

  • Highway A1 to Salzburg
  • Highway A10 Tauernautobahn Salzburg - Villach

Arrival from the south

The ÖBB Tauernschleuse takes you stress-free from Carinthia (Mallnitz) to your vacation region of Gastein in Salzburgerland.

The car transfer trains run every 60 minutes. The short journey time of 11 minutes flies by.

  • Departure in Mallnitz-Obervellach heading north (every hour at minute 50): first train at 05:50, last train at 22:50
  • Departure in Böckstein heading south (every hour at minute 20): first train at 06:20, last train at 23:20

Please note that the Tauernbahn car lock will not be available for the duration of the construction work, from November 18, 2024 to July 4, 2025!
