Sightseeing while cycling by: In search of beautiful cycle paths?
Explore the Gastein Valley by bike or e-bike and check out one or two sights. That means parking the car and getting on the bike. Great cycling tours adorn the valley and lead to exciting excursion destinations. So nothing stands in the way of a cycling trip with the whole family. There are several exciting sights along the cycle routes that are worth getting off at, such as Klammstein Castle and the Gastein Museum. In Gastein, cycling is combined with sightseeing.
You don't have to arrive by bike. Simply rent a bike, e-bike, children's bike or mountain bike from one of the bike rental shops and marvel at Gastein from the saddle.
If you prefer it more racy and challenging, then take one of the mountain bike tours.
The Gastein Bike Path leads through the entire valley, from Dorfgastein to Bad Gastein. The path begins flat and takes you, in parts, along the banks of the Gasteiner Ache. Hear the rush of the water and feel the cooling breezes. The stage from Bad Hofgastein to Bad Gastein climbs steadily, gradually gaining 200 vertical meters. For a more leisurely ride, we would suggest renting out an E-bike. Plus, the other cyclists will be quite astonished as you cruise past them on the steeper sections. In every town, you will come across numerous restaurants and cafés, all of which invite you to pause and enjoy a few refreshments. Stroll through the pedestrian zones and explore the shops, where you are sure to find a souvenir or two to take home with you.
Are you crossing the Alps by bicycle and riding via the Ciclovia Alps-Adriatic Route from Salzburg to Italy? If so, you will also get to know bike-friendly Gastein first hand. The second stage runs from Bischofshofen, through the Klammstein Bike Tunnel, then the length of Gastein Valley as far as Bad Gastein, where you will find numerous hotels to spend the night and rest. If your legs are already getting heavy and tired, simply find accommodations in Dorfgastein or Bad Hofgastein. Visit one of the spa resorts and treat yourself to a massage. Afterwards, your legs will feel lighter than air, you'll be totally recovered and eager to set out on the next stage. If you ever encounter a technical issue with your bike, there's no cause to worry either: Our area bike shops are always happy to help. The next morning, an 11-minute train ride will transport you and your bike to Carinthia. Back in the saddle again, 6 more stages will finally bring you to Grado on the Adriatic, where you will more than have earned a wonderful plate of spaghetti.
Tip: Never forget your sun block, which you should apply regularly, and bring along plenty of water to drink. Always have a full water bottle with you. If it's empty, Mother Nature is there to assist: The water in Gastein's lakes, springs and streams is pure enough to drink.
After 113 years, it is time to subject the heavily frequented connection between Salzburg and Carinthia to a complete modernization for safety reasons. In November 2024 , the time has come, the Tauern Tunnel will cease operation for 8 months.
